Latest on the Swine Flu Outbreak...



Addressing the nation in a televised message President Felipe Calderón said that within the next 72 hours Mexico will have labs that are able to identify the A/H1N1 swine flu strain… Calderón said that the swine flu is a “serious but curable” disease if treated in a timely fashion…Calderón’s message to the nation came after a special meeting of the National Health Council… The president called on Mexico’s population to remain calm, to go to the doctor if symptoms appear, not to self medicate, and to follow recommendations from health authorities to rein in the outbreak.

Health Secretary José Ángel Córdova Villalobos said that in view of the swine flu outbreak all academic classes at all levels, both public and private, including university, will be suspended in the Federal District, State of Mexico and San Luis Potosí until at least Wednesday, May 6.

Hidalgo and Querétaro state government also announced classes would be suspended as a preventative measure.

Economy Secretary Gerardo Ruiz Mateos said the outbreak of swine flu will not halt economic activity in the country… Labor Secretary Javier Lozano called for understanding and sensitivity on the part of employers to tolerate delays or absences on the part of workers because of measures connected to the flu outbreak.

The National Health Council was set to continue to provide updates on the evolution of the outbreak…
